Cameroonian HealthTech Waspito Launches AI Assistant AHIM on WhatsApp for 24/7 Triage

Africa-focused digital health platform Waspito has launched AHIM (African Health Intelligent Model), an AI-powered assistant accessible via WhatsApp. Designed to streamline clinical triage and facilitate consultations, laboratory orders, and prescription deliveries, the service aims to expand healthcare access across sub-Saharan Africa.

AI-Driven Triage Embedded in Everyday Messaging Infrastructure

Cameroonian digital health startup Waspito has unveiled AHIM—short for African Health Intelligent Model—an artificial intelligence assistant built directly into WhatsApp. By integrating conversational AI into a messaging application utilized daily by millions of users across Africa, the platform eliminates software download friction, allowing patients to navigate healthcare workflows without installing additional native applications. Operating continuously 24/7 in both English and French, AHIM acts as an intelligent front-door navigation layer for the company’s broader telemedicine ecosystem.

Through the WhatsApp interface, users can initiate symptom intake, schedule consultations with licensed practitioners, order laboratory diagnostic tests with home collection, submit medical documentation, purchase health insurance packages, and facilitate pharmacy prescriptions. The deployment addresses a key bottleneck in African HealthTech: bridging the gap between initial digital interaction and secondary medical intervention through low-bandwidth, accessible channels.

Clinical Human-in-the-Loop Safeguards and Pricing Structure

Recognizing the clinical risks associated with autonomous medical diagnostic tools, Waspito has structured AHIM around strict human-in-the-loop operational boundaries. The AI assistant is restricted to preliminary health triage, administrative routing, and guidance gathering; it does not issue formal medical diagnoses or prescribe treatment plans independently. Final clinical evaluations, treatment decisions, and pharmaceutical approvals remain strictly reserved for certified physicians within the startup’s professional medical network.

While interaction with the AHIM WhatsApp assistant is free of charge, downstream clinical services follow a transparent pay-per-use model. Consultations with general practitioners start at 3,000 FCFA (approximately $5 USD), while consultations with specialist physicians begin at 6,000 FCFA. This fee structure provides affordable access to accredited practitioners without requiring upfront subscription commitments.

Scaling Digital Telemedicine Infrastructure across Africa

Founded in 2020 by Jean Lobe Lobe, Waspito has scaled its operations to serve more than 250,000 patients across a user network exceeding one million individuals. The platform's provider backend links over 2,000 verified doctors, 180 accredited laboratory partners, and 640 licensed pharmacies. The introduction of AHIM marks a significant milestone in leveraging generative AI models to simplify patient intake and expand digital health coverage across Central and West Africa.
