OpenAI says AI helped surface critical security flaws in PHP, the programming language behind a large share of the web, and that a two-month coordinated effort has now produced fixes. The company published the account on 21 October 2026 under its Patch the Planet initiative, along with a proposed five-stage framework for responding to critical vulnerabilities in the AI era.
What happened
According to OpenAI, it led a coalition of maintainers, researchers and security providers over about two months to address critical vulnerabilities in PHP. Security firm Calif identified a critical flaw using an OpenAI model as part of Patch the Planet, and Wiz independently discovered and reported both vulnerabilities. OpenAI says the fix was intricate and required a major change to the PHP engine, which is why preparation took so long before disclosure.
OpenAI's account is that, to its knowledge, frontier AI found the bugs before attackers did, giving maintainers and security providers a "Defender's Window" to prepare fixes and protections ahead of disclosure. That is the company's own claim and cannot be independently confirmed from the post. A reader note attached to OpenAI's announcement on X points out that initial discovery and exploit work on the bug had reportedly been done months earlier by an independent researcher, and that OpenAI's role was in coordination and patching. PHP's maintainers led the actual fix and release.
The five-stage framework
OpenAI is asking the security community to help improve a proposed approach for responding to critical flaws in widely used software:
- Validate and fix the upstream vulnerability, using adversarial testing.
- Give affected organisations time to act through outreach and coordination.
- Coordinate with government partners such as CISA and ONCD to protect critical systems.
- Prepare updates across affected products with distributors and providers.
- Publish guidance and support deployment once a patch is ready.
OpenAI is also sharing a PHP version checker as a Codex skill to help teams see whether they are exposed.
What site owners should do
OpenAI says every site running PHP can now upgrade to a safe version and apply mitigations from security vendors. If you run or host PHP applications, such as WordPress, Laravel or custom sites, check your PHP version, apply the latest patched release from your host or distribution, and follow your security vendor's guidance. This article does not list specific version numbers, so confirm them against PHP's official release notes.
Why it matters
Patch the Planet launched earlier this year as an OpenAI-funded effort working with HackerOne, Calif and Trail of Bits to support open-source maintainers. The PHP case is its highest-profile test so far. It shows both the promise and the strain of AI-assisted vulnerability hunting: models can find serious bugs faster, but the human work of patching, coordinating and disclosing responsibly still takes months, and falls largely on maintainers.
