OpenAI Raises $11 Billion at a $1.25 Trillion Valuation as Price Talk for Anthropic's IPO Slides

OpenAI has reportedly raised $11 billion at a $1.25 trillion valuation, below its earlier $1.4 trillion target, as buyers eye a lower price for Anthropic's IPO. Here is what is reported and what is not final.

OpenAI has reportedly raised $11 billion at a valuation of $1.25 trillion, according to Bloomberg and Reuters on 6 November 2026, while Bloomberg separately reported that potential buyers of shares in rival Anthropic's planned IPO are eyeing a much lower valuation than expected a month ago. Together the two stories show how quickly sentiment toward the biggest AI labs has shifted since the stock market sell-off.

OpenAI's round

Bloomberg, citing people familiar with the matter, reported that the $11 billion so far is part of a larger funding round that has not closed and is expected to wrap up in the coming weeks, possibly totalling around $20 billion. The round values the company at $1.25 trillion. In September, Bloomberg had reported that OpenAI expected to raise $30 billion at a valuation of $1.4 trillion, so both the amount and the price are lower than first planned. OpenAI has not confirmed the figures, and TechCrunch said it had asked the company for comment.

OpenAI previously signalled it might go public this year, then delayed. Reuters has reported, citing OpenAI president Greg Brockman, that a listing is now expected in 2027. Earlier this year the company also raised more than $3 billion from individual investors through bank channels and expanded its revolving credit facility to about $4.7 billion, which was undrawn at that time.

Anthropic's IPO price talk

Hours earlier, Bloomberg reported that some prospective buyers believe Anthropic's value could be as low as $1.1 trillion, compared with the $2 trillion that investors were said to expect about a month ago. Other outlets reported different figures: Unite.AI, summarising Reuters, said some investors value the planned offering at about $1.5 trillion, and one daily digest put the range being discussed at $1.2 trillion to $1.3 trillion. The numbers differ because they come from different sources and are informal estimates, not an official price. Anthropic has not set a price range, and in a Japanese filing earlier this week it said it plans to sell up to $3.5 billion of shares to investors in Japan.

Why the reset matters

  • The AI sell-off on 5 November, when the Nasdaq fell 5.5%, has made public-market investors more cautious about very large valuations.
  • Both labs need vast amounts of money for computing power, so a lower price means they must sell more of the company to raise the same amount.
  • OpenAI's private round shields it from daily stock-market swings for now, while Anthropic will face them as a public company.

What is still unknown

Neither valuation is final. OpenAI's round has not closed, its investors and terms have not been fully disclosed, and Anthropic's IPO price and timing depend on market conditions. Even at lower figures, both companies would be worth far more than most of the world's largest businesses.
